Bridge Closure

Monday, September 18, 2017

Lowell – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has announced the closure of the Market Street Bridge over the Western Canal between Suffolk Street and Lewis Street on Monday September 18, 2017 for the full demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.

The detour route for the bridge closure is north on Suffolk Street to Merrimack Street, east on Merrimack Street to Cardinal O’Connell Parkway, then south along Cardinal O’Connell Parkway back to Market Street.

Variable Message Boards will be deployed in advance of the closure reminding drivers of the date and appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and messaging will be in place to guide drivers during these operations.

The closure is expected to continue until through late Fall 2018 at which time the new bridge will be opened to traffic and pedestrians.

This closure is required as part of a 2.3 million dollar bridge reconstruction project to replace the structurally deficient Market Street bridge over the Western Canal.  In addition, new ADA compliant sidewalks, pavement and pavement markings will be installed as part of the project.
