MassDOT has announced that a section of Father Morissette Boulevard westbound in Lowell will be closed to all vehicular traffic on the evenings of Thursday, December 6, and Friday, December 7.
These off-peak impacts will occur each night between the hours of 9 p.m., and 5 a.m., and will allow crews and contractors to carry out demolition operations on the bridge that carries Pawtucket Street over the Northern Canal.
During this time, all westbound traffic on Father Morissette Boulevard will be detoured at the intersection of Aiken Street, directed left onto Aiken Street, and then right onto Merrimack Street westbound where it will rejoin Pawtucket Street/Father Morissette Boulevard at the University Avenue Bridge.
These bridge demolition operations involve removing large steel girders from the existing bridge to allow for bridge reconstruction. This work is part of a $12.8 million project to replace 5 canal bridges on the Merrimac River in Lowell.
Signs, traffic control devices and messaging will be used to guide drivers throughout this area. MassDOT encourages drivers to seek alternate routes to minimize delays. Those traveling through the area should reduce speed and use caution. All work is weather dependent and is subject to change without notice.
