MassDOT Advisory: Lowell
Reopening of Pawtucket Street Bridge over the Northern Canal
New bridge will reopen on Friday, December 10, and has been reconstructed to accommodate pedestrian traffic
LOWELL – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing the Pawtucket Street Bridge located over the Northern Canal in Lowell will be reopened for travel on Friday, December 10. The bridge is scheduled to be reopened during afternoon hours after traffic marking operations have been completed and the detour restrictions have been removed.
The Pawtucket Street Bridge has been closed to all vehicular traffic since July 30, 2018, to facilitate a full reconstruction of the bridge. In addition to reopening the bridge to vehicles, the new bridge will be capable of accommodating pedestrian traffic on both sides for the UMass Lowell students walking between the dorms and classes.
This work is associated with the $12.1 million project to reconstruct or rehabilitate five bridges as part of the Tiger Grant program.
Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.
Drivers who are traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.
All scheduled work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
