Storage Shed Permits

When a Storage Shed Permit is Required

Storage sheds that exceed 200 square feet require building permits.

A shed no more than 200 square feet in area and 16 feet in height may be located within the side and rear yard setbacks. However, it must be at least 10 feet from the dwelling.

Sheds That Don't Require Foundations

A shed of up to 200 square feet is small enough so as not to require a foundation. However, it must still be anchored to the ground. Kits are available for this purpose. This is to prevent overturning due to wind, and is especially important for aluminum sheds. Sheds greater than 200 square feet or which have utilities connected to them (plumbing, gas, electric, sewer, etc. as in the case of a swimming pool filter house) must be on a footing extending below frost to prevent movement due to frost action.
