South of downtown lies the Wamesit Canal-Whipple Mill Industrial Complex. Located on the western bank of the Concord River opposite Lawrence Street, the district contains mill structures and hydropower elements dating from the 1820s to the early 20th century. Listed on the National Register of HIstoric Places in 1982, the district contains eight structures.
The district is also located within the boundaries of the National Register-listed Lowell National Historical Park & Preservation District (1978).
